Outbound prospecting

An AI SDR for the prospecting nobody has time to do

An appointment setter works people who already raised their hand. An SDR creates interest that did not previously exist, which is a materially harder conversation.

Quick answer

What does an AI SDR do?

An AI SDR conducts outbound sales development — reaching prospects who have not enquired, opening the conversation, establishing whether there is a fit against your criteria, handling initial objections, and booking qualified meetings into your sales pipeline while logging the outcome in the CRM.

The problem

What this actually fixes

  • Outbound prospecting is the first thing dropped when the team gets busy.

  • Reps spend their day dialling rather than talking to interested people.

  • Prospecting quality varies enormously by individual and by mood.

  • Follow-up after the first attempt rarely happens, which is where most meetings come from.

  • Hiring SDRs is expensive, slow, and the role has high turnover.

  • Your ideal customer profile exists in a document nobody applies consistently.

Scope

What's included

Every engagement is scoped to what you actually need. This is the full deliverable list.

  1. Deliverable 01

    ICP and qualification criteria

What a genuinely qualified meeting looks like, defined precisely enough for an agent to apply consistently.

  2. Deliverable 02

    Conversation design

Opening, value framing, qualification questions, objection handling and booking language, reviewed by whoever currently prospects best.

  3. Deliverable 03

    Multi-touch cadence

Sequenced attempts across days and channels, with defined spacing and a defined stopping point.

  4. Deliverable 04

    Consent and suppression

Do-not-call screening, calling windows by local time and consent checks appropriate to your markets. Non-negotiable on cold outbound.

  5. Deliverable 05

    CRM logging

Every attempt, outcome and transcript on the record, so the pipeline reflects reality rather than optimism.

  6. Deliverable 06

    Meeting handoff

Booked meetings arrive with the qualification detail attached, so the rep starts informed.

How it works

From first call to running system

  1. Step

    Define qualified

Vague criteria produce a calendar full of bad meetings, which wastes more time than an empty one.

  2. Step

Build the list and check consent

Target list assembled with a defensible consent basis. This step is where cold outbound goes wrong legally.

  3. Step

    Design and build

Conversation, cadence and CRM integration built, with suppression lists loaded.

  4. Step

    Pilot narrowly

One segment, transcripts reviewed against real objections, then scaled if it works.

Use cases

Where this earns its keep

Consistent outbound coverage

Prospecting that happens every day rather than when someone has a spare afternoon.

Testing a new segment

Validating whether a market responds before hiring against it.

Reactivating cold pipeline

Working opportunities that went dark months ago.

The honest expectation

Cold outbound is the hardest thing on this site to do well, and the application where we are most likely to tell you not to.

Connect rates on cold calling are low for everyone, human or otherwise. An AI SDR does not change that — it changes the cost of attempting it, which makes a low conversion rate economically viable where paying a person to dial would not be.

That is a real advantage and a narrower one than most vendors imply. If your list is poorly targeted, or your offer does not survive a cold conversation, more attempts at lower cost produces more rejection at lower cost.

Get the targeting and the offer right first. Then volume helps.

Questions

AI SDR — common questions

Is cold AI calling legal?

It depends heavily on market, list and consent basis, and cold outbound is where this question is sharpest. TCPA governs US automated calling with state-level additions; the UK requires TPS screening; Australia has the Do Not Call Register. We build screening, calling windows and suppression in — and on cold outbound specifically you should take your own legal advice rather than relying on a vendor's configuration.

How is this different from an appointment setter?

An appointment setter works people who have already shown interest — enquiries, existing contacts, warm lists. An SDR contacts people who have not, which means the conversation has to create interest rather than convert it. Different script, different expectations, materially different connect-to-meeting rates.

Will prospects hang up on an AI?

Many will, and that is also true of human SDRs. The relevant comparison is cost per qualified meeting rather than per call. Where AI outbound works, it is because volume is achievable at a cost that makes a lower conversion rate acceptable — not because it out-converts a good human rep.

Will it damage our brand?

It can, and cold outbound carries more of that risk than any other application. Poor targeting, calling at unreasonable hours or refusing to hand off will do real damage. The mitigations are disclosure, tight targeting, calling windows and a defined stopping point — and being genuinely willing to stop if the transcripts read badly.

Should we replace our SDR team with this?

We would be cautious about that framing. Where we see it work best is covering the volume a human team cannot reach — additional segments, follow-up attempts, dormant pipeline — rather than replacing reps who are already converting well. If your SDRs are performing, the case is augmentation.
